High Frequency Words

High frequency words are the words that occur most often during reading and writing. It is very important that students are able to identify, read and write them instantly, without having to use strategies to read and write them.

Start with a few words at a time.  It's always helpful to include a couple of words your child already knows to build their confidence.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • make two sets of the words and play 'Memory'
  • paint a piece of board or a cupboard door with blackboard paint and write the words using chalk
  • make a set of the words, lay them on the floor and ask your child to pick up a specified word
  • use magnetic letters or words on the fridge
  • write the words with a paint brush and water, or chalk on concrete
  • use playdough to make the words
  • write the words in shaving foam or in sand
  • find and cut out the words in magazines, or cut out letters to make the words
  • make a set of the words, put a paper clip on each one and pick up a specified word with a magnet on a piece of string or stick
  • go on a word hunt - write the words on post-its and put around the house
  • use window crayons to write the words
  • make a set of the words beginning with a capital letter.  Your child can match the upper and lower case versions e.g. the/The or here/Here
  • use an iPad or tablet app that allows your child to write the words on the screen

SPCA Visit to the Tui Team Today

For the second half of term one the Tui children have been learning about caring for pets.  They have been learning about different types of pets, what they need to be safe and happy and what they can do to care for pets.

Melissa, an animal welfare inspector from the SPCA (and Mrs Rush's daughter) visited this morning. The children learned about what she does for her job, and how she keeps animals safe. They showed that they were really thinking about their learning by asking some really good questions.

Melissa even demonstrated how cats are caught safely using Mrs Heasman's Eeyore toy!
